why is self pity so discouraged?

You are reading http://viridianariverstone.blogspot.com/.
Why does "pity" mean "compassion," but "self-pity" means "self-indulgence?"

I have a theory about this. I think language, especially language about emotions, is very androcentric. I think men decided showing compassion for one's self in a crisis is a sign of weakness, that "real men" should just suck it up. And I think women have adopted this value, as well: if we feel compassion toward ourselves, we're not tough enough for a "man's world."

I think it is absolutely essential, especially in a life-altering or -threatening crisis that we be able to give ourselves aid and show ourselves mercy. By the latter, I mean not getting trapped in guilt and self hatred.

I think the fact we are so strongly discouraged from this process of feeling compassion and mercy toward ourselves PREVENTS us from giving ourselves aid (because we think we don't deserve it) and SERIOUSLY disables us psychologically.

Therefore, I hereby call for a reclamation of the concept of self-pity. I am not calling for self-indulgence; I am calling for a gentle state in which we can heal ourselves.

I awoke with a creative itch to tweak some GOP nipples today.

The last few debates for the GOP have produced some memorable moments and helped define the Republican base "personality." It seems pretty clear to most which way their hot air blows. But some independent voters might be a tad confused. Not to worry. I have created a video to help them listen "correctly" to their message.

If you know a voter who is also confused about the nominees and their intentions, please share this video with them. It's illuminating, informative and, dare I say, titillating?

Yes, kids, mama needs your help in getting this quick video "bon bon" out into the cyberverse. Tweet, fark, stumble, digg, buzz, post, email and blog it, baby! (And, yes, I am working on the talking doll version...)

Response from Potholer54 and Amenakin

As an atheist & woman, I am appalled, knowing u received abuse. I came 2 yer channel & found an independent business woman. I know this is not easy, especially in SOME religions. I cannot apologize 4 the behavior of my fellows; that's their responsibility. I will only give my heart-felt respect 2 u 4 yer efforts. I do not agree with u on lots of things, including the DMC against Potholer54. But that is no reason 4 the toxic language used toward u. Best wishes. Brilliant video.

Episode 7: Christian Parents

Uploaded by on Sep 24, 2011

Is it good for children to have Christian parents? I barely scrape the surface on this topic, but I think this insight might help on-the-fence Christians become better parents.

Music: Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve
All images used under fair use.

Transcript:
Here is a short assessment to help you determine if you need to revisit some of your parenting techniques.

1) Do you teach your children that the bible is the perfect word of god?
2) Have you read the entire bible since becoming an adult?
3) If you answered "Yes" to #1 and "No" to #2... Then what are you thinking?

If you tell your children that the bible is the perfect word of god, but you have not read and personally approved the entire text - then you are exposing your children to the risk of psycological damage.

What happens when your child opens the book and finds a passage that you didn't realize was in there. For example: imagine that your daughter, she opens the Bible to 1 Timothy 2:11-14. What does your endorsement of that text teach her about her place in society?

Here are a few examples from four important women in my life:

My sister was brought up fundamentalist Christian - and now she is a housewife with no education and no marketable skills. If she and her husband split up - then she will be financially helpless.

My mother was also brought up believing that the bible was the word of god - now she is divorced, in her late 50's and living paycheck to paycheck with no health insurance. She was submissive to her husband - even during the divorce negotiations - which left her screwed.

Let's look at one more example from the bible before discussing the other two women in my life.

Imagine that you have a son. he opens the bible and sees (matthew 12:39) where Jesus rebuked a crowd for their lack of faith - because they asked him to prove himself with a sign. By endorsing that text you just taught your child to be susceptible to every con that tries to push something onto him.

The other Two women:

My wife had the benefit of a secular upbringing. Her parents did not even introduce her to the bible. She was taught to think critically, to question, to respect herself. Now she is a strong, successful business woman. I consult with her on every negotiation - whether it is for a car, jewelry, a new mortgage deal, terms on a new job - and without fail, she catches me in the act of believing something that the sales person is trying to slip past me. If more people were raised like my wife was then con-artists around the world would not find it so easy to make a fortune off the predisposition that religious people have to feel guilty about not believing. My wife simply doesn't have that predisposition - and it works brilliantly for her.

Additionally, she is fun loving, caring and considerate, she is spirited and she is always thinking of ways to help others.

The fourth woman.

My daughter is still a toddler. She will learn that the bible is simply a collection of books that were written a long time ago and had a heavy impact on western society. She will learn that she is valuable. She will learn to think critically, to question everything, and to not let anyone make her feel guilty for not believing something. She is a lucky girl - because her parents are not religious. Her parents will not act irrationally under fear of losing their daughter to an eternity in hell. After we teach her to respect herself and those around her, and to think critically, she can be whatever she wants to be. She will truly be free. She can be whatever she wants to be on her own terms: a musician, a sales person, a political activist, an english teacher, a lesbian, a housewife, a liberal, a conservative - and if she decides to, she can even become... religious.

I only mentioned two of the many things a child can find in the bible that could damage their psyche when endorsed by their parents. There are countless other things. If anything comes to mind, please leave a comment or make a video response. Thank You.

150 mile wardrobe: local fiber, real color, Gandhi economy

Uploaded by on Sep 20, 2011

Except for notions (buttons, zippers, etc), everything in Rebecca Burgess' wardrobe has been grown and designed within 150 miles of her home. But until putting her closet on a diet one year ago, nearly all her clothing was produced far from home, and that made her a very typical American.

Over the past half century the U.S. textile industry has been decimated. "In 1965, 95% of the clothing in a typical American's closet was made in America," Burgess writes on her blog, "today less than 5% of our clothes are made here."

Upset by the outsourcing of the American wardrobe, as well as the disconnect this by the waste produced by the textile industry worldwide (it's the #1 polluter of fresh water on the planet and America's 5th largest polluting industry), Burgess decided she needed to focus public attention on local fabric, in the same way the food movement had done with local food.

Inspired by the success of challenges like the 100 Mile Diet, Burgess decided to put her closet on a diet. For six weeks she wore one outfit (created from local rancher Sally Fox's color-grown cotton that Fox had milled back in 1983 before the area lost all of its mills), but then local designers, in collaboration with local farmers, began creating more hand spun/knitted/dyed pieces until her wardrobe had become so complete she even had a naturally-wicking alpaca raincoat.

Rebecca calls her experiment the Fibershed Project, because like a foodshed or watershed, her fibershed- the 150 mile radius of her home- is big enough to provide for all the fibers and dyes necessary to create a diverse wardrobe. She admits she's lucky to be in Northern California where there are plenty of ranchers raising even alpacas, angoras and mohair goats and where there's an ideal climate for growing a variety of color-grown cottons.

In this video, we visit Burgess at her dye farm in Lagunitas, California and her home nearby where she shows us her 150-mile wardrobe, including a bicycle-felted vest and a sweater made from the wool of the oldest rancher in the fibershed (a 96-year-old sheep rancher) and the youngest designer (an 18-year-old knitter).

Too Many Dicks on The Daily Show

It's not even about whether women are "funny;" "Daily Show" covers current events and, if one used it, alone, to gauge who is, or is not, influential in culture and society, one would think OUR women were wearing burkas and not allowed outdoors! This is a lot of fun. I'm putting it in my blog & on Facebook. It really rocks, no pun intended. Too bad the song ain't "Too Many Whites, Straights, Rich, etc."

Uploaded by on Sep 8, 2011
An episode of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is interrupted by a remixed critique of the show's gender imbalance and "boys' locker room" comedy style. The remix takeover was created by pop-culture hacker Jonathan McIntosh using clips borrowed from over 100 episodes of The Daily Show edited to (and subverting) the song "Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor" by Flight of the Conchords.

I'm a fan of The Daily Show about 50% of the time but often find myself disappointed with the overwhelmingly male-centered style, jokes, segments and guests. I can't help but feel that there are, in fact, just too many dicks on the dance floor.

The serious lack of women in on-screen or leading creative roles on The Daily Show and other late-night comedy shows has been well documented and discussed in recent years. But here's a quick recap: Only 3 of the 12 regular correspondences/contributors on The Daily Show are women. Only 2 of the 16 writers are women. And so far barely 15% of the guests in 2011 have been women.

Read more about this video on my site:
http://www.rebelliouspixels.com/2011/too-many-dicks-on-the-daily-show

INSPIRATION:
This remix was inspired by the practice of fan vidding and specifically by the vid Star Trek Dance Floor created by Sloane. She used the same song to point out the lack of female characters in J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek reboot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deQuFc3BP74

In 2010 Feminist Frequency video blogger mashed-up the same song in order to highlight the violent phallic imagery in modern video games.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?src_vid=uzU1_CsOnJA

Interestingly the original Flight of the Conchords song is in no way meant to be critical of sexism -- in fact its slightly homophobic -- but when it is combined with any male-centered media source it instantly becomes a critical commentary. Try remixing it and see for yourself!

ON COMMENTING:
I welcome good comments but I've decided to hold all comments for approval on this one (for obvious reasons) in an attempt to provide a space for a somewhat productive conversation. Sexist comments will not ever be approved. Any variation of the "women just aren't funny" or the "there aren't many funny women" nonsense will also not be approved so don't even try. The old "its just comedy" defense will be denied as well because comedy is one of the primary ways that sexism and sexist messages are normalized and reinforced in our culture.

Many Black women (including myself) have faced the daily anxiety of walking past enclaves of damaged men getting harassed... Know that you're not alone... Do not let dissenters minimize the situation or say that Black women are blowing things out of proportion... Be on the lookout for predator protectionism... Do not fall for the video vixen/promiscuous woman red-herring argument as a subtle way to excuse this behavior, keeping the status-quot... I have heard so many of these nonsense prevailing attitudes i.e., "Why can't Black women at least say HI when being approached?" I don't care if the woman is the most stuck-up creature on the face of the earth...She is NOT OBLIGATED TO SPEAK TO YOU...Ladies, you DO NOT have any obligation to talk to a stranger...Remember A STRANGER!!! Everyone should know that harassment is a crime and NO ONE has to tolerate it... Young Black girls coming up DO NOT have to live this way! What can you do? Stop excusing, ignoring and enabling these predators. Keep in contact with the police and other officials...Give the police whereabouts, timeframes and content of these occurrences...They will usually do extra patrols...Eventually these types will be ran off by law enforcement....You are NOT a "snitch" for reporting and discouraging crime...You are NOT a "troublemaker" for wanting a safe environment for yourself, the elderly, children and everyone else in the neighborhood...And most of all, you are NOT hating anyone for pointing out and discussing a problem within certain communities...If enough of us display the extra effort, then something will get done...Be vigilant and there is power in numbers...

Bringing Feminist Journalism to the Mainstream

Uploaded by on Apr 29, 2011

Breaking into the mainstream media dialogue with a feminist story can be a challenge. Fortunately, there's a whole host of writers and editors working to produce stories relevant to women, and to prove that these stories can be successful. At the 2011 Women, Action and the Media (WAM!) New York City conference, a group of these writers and editors came together for a panel conversation on how to shift the mainstream media dialogue in a more feminist-friendly direction. Moderated by freelance journalist Sarah Seltzer, the panel featured ColorLines blogger Akiba Solomon, Associate Editor of AlterNet Lauren Kelley and Executive Editor of Raw Story Megan Carpentier.

How can writers deal with nasty comment sections? Write effectively for audiences without a background in feminism? And, perhaps most importantly, how can writers make a living covering these issues? The panel tackles these issues and more.

More research on solving the mystery of the female orgasm

You are reading http://viridianariverstone.blogspot.com/.

"why did FEMALE orgasm evolve?!" As though it isn't a necessary, biological function, if, for no other reason, so female mammals would even consent to sexual reproduction by experiencing pleasure and, more importantly, SEEK PLEASURE to satisfy the imperative need to do so? And, while I continue ranting on the STUPIDITY of androcentricism, in which MALE experience is the ONLY IMPORTANT experience, must I remind biologists that, in the womb ALL zygotes and embryos are FEMALE, until such time as the chromosomal structure of XY, with no counteracting XX to stop it, triggers the production of so-called "male" hormones in the host mother, which cause the developing child to lose its capacity for uterus and vagina, places the gonads outside the body and, frequently, enlarges the clitoral structure into a penis? In other words, we are ALL female in our early stages of development! A much more pertinent question for these researchers would be: why are you such sexist ass hats?

reply in discussion on Facebook:
oh, hell; Jewish police patrolled the ghettos under the Nazis. Women are trained in male institutions and, in order to "succeed," must often adopt the dominant, male values. Having a woman in the research team provides "politically correct" cover, so the researchers play an end-run around my very suspicion that this research is androcentric: "well, a woman said so, so you can't accuse us of THAT!" While I completely agree with your statements about the suppression of female sexuality and the pain that causes (not just in the individual women, themselves, but to our entire, human family), I must stand by my suspicions of androcentricism. Look: they compare female orgasm to male nipples: as though the female orgasm is some vestige, no longer necessary and something we could really do without, like the appendix. Male breasts can be developed to produce milk It requires a lot of stimulation and it helps if the particular male in question has a relatively-low ratio of male-to-female hormones, but men CAN NURSE.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fetal_genital_development#Sequence
In typical fetal development, the presence of the SRY gene causes the fetal gonads to become testes; the absence of it allows the gonads to continue to develop into ovaries. Thereafter, the development of the internal reproductive organs and the external genitalia is determined by hormones produced by fetal gonads (ovaries or testes) and the cells' response to them. /quote Some argue that the zygote/embryo is genderless; many more argue that it is female before the hormones kick in.

I meant it is rather insinuated by the comparison to male nipples. I don't think it's either/or, either. I want more research done into mammalian, female sexuality, period: Does a great ape have a clitoris? Do other mammals? I know chickens seem to have something very similar to what roosters have...can't think of the name right now; starts with "C." in both sexes. I also want a LOT more research into human gender variations; there are way more genders than 2, and the others get scant research, only "gender modification" treatments like surgeries and hormone therapies, so they'll look more "normal," like one gender or the other. I think the entire academy -- not just this field of research -- needs to be captured by women and other genders besides male, people of color, people with disabilities and the economically exploited, before we'll EVER be able to do thorough research on issues like these.  As to your statement that I should have been a scientist, remember my disabilities and my gender, which assured the institutions of learning would discourage me from being an academic success. I probably would have been a decent lawyer or journalist, as well: I champion truth, logic and rational explanations and am endlessly curious about damn near everything. So, I will leave you with a quote from the 1994 version of the film, "Little Women:"

Jo March: I find it poor logic to say that because women are good, women should vote. Men do not vote because they are good; they vote because they are male, and women should vote, not because we are angels and men are animals, but because we are human beings and citizens of this country.
Mr. Mayer: You should have been a lawyer, Miss March.
Jo March: I should have been a great many things, Mr. Mayer.

en.wikipedia.org
A few weeks after fertilization, the initial appearance of the human fetal genitalia is basically feminine: a pair of "urogenital folds" with a small protuberance in the middle, and the urethra behind the protuberance.

More research on solving the mystery of the female orgasm

Summary of story from New Scientist, September 9, 2011
Evolutionary biologists are still stuck on this one – why did the female orgasm evolve? Did it come about to give a reproductive boost to women or is it, perhaps, a by-product of the evolution of the male orgasm?
Some evolutionary biologists think that the female orgasm is adaptive and possibly influences mate choice, strengthens pair bonds or indirectly helps to suck sperm into the uterus.
Others argue that women have orgasms for the same reason that men have nipples – being highly adaptive in one sex, the traits tag along for the ride in the other.
Researchers Brendan Zietsch at the University of Queensland, Australia, and Pekka Santtila at Abo Akademi University in Turku, Finland, quizzed just under 5,000 sets of identical and non-identical sets of twins and pairs of siblings on their sexual habits.
The questionnaire asked about the time to orgasm in men and the frequency and ease of orgasm in women.
In keeping with previous findings, it was found that same-sex identical twins had more orgasmic similarity than same-sex non-identical twins and siblings, showing that genes do play a role in orgasmic function.
Contrary to the expectations of the by-product scenario, the two researchers found that opposite-sex twins and siblings had virtually no correlation in “orgasmability”.
“This indicates that the genes that influence orgasmic function in men are not the same as those in women,” says Zietsch.
In other words, male and female orgasm evolved through different genetic routes, and the by-product hypothesis is incorrect.
Those who favour the by-product hypothesis think such a firm conclusion is premature.
Kim Wallen at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, points out that the study measured different things in men and women – timing to orgasm versus likelihood of orgasm – and so a correlation would be unlikely.
Zietsch counters that different measures were necessary because of the different nature of male and female orgasm.
The mystery continues…

I am, unabashedly, atheist. Part of the reason is that I am also, unabashedly, feminist. I don't single out any one religion for criticism. All the major religions have been used as tools to oppress and control, especially women. That does not mean I won't listen to, or support, women in those religions, especially when they are having open dialogue. This is a funny video, by Muslim women.

I figured it was some racist cracker who didn't like how much I appreciated Criss' video "I'm not a racist, but" So I came here, ready to reply, "no, but somebody CAN be too ignorant to post on YouTube! I loved yer "Black" tape, then saw this & was all ready to be mad again! LOL. I'm sharing this on Facebook. You're all right! I usually HATE unsolicited tapes in email, but this is just great. subscribing
