Our Prejudices, Ourselves

AMERICA is watching Don Imus’s self-immolation in a state of shock and awe. And I’m watching America with wry amusement.
Since I’m a second-class citizen — a gay man — my seats for the ballgame of American discourse are way back in the bleachers. I don’t have to wait long for a shock jock or stand-up comedian to slip up with hateful epithets aimed at me and mine. Hate speak against homosexuals is as commonplace as spam. It’s daily traffic for those who profess themselves to be regular Joes, men of God, public servants who live off my tax dollars, as well as any number of celebrities.
In fact, I get a good chuckle whenever someone refers to “the media” as an agent of “the gay agenda.” There are entire channels, like Spike TV, that couldn’t fill an hour of programming if required to remove their sexist and homophobic content. We’ve got a president and a large part of Congress willing to change the Constitution so they can deprive of us our rights because they feel we are not “normal.”
So I’m used to catching foul balls up here in the cheap seats. What I am really enjoying is watching the rest of you act as if you had no idea that prejudice was alive and well in your hearts and minds.
For the past two decades political correctness has been derided as a surrender to thin-skinned, humorless, uptight oversensitive sissies. Well, you anti-politically correct people have won the battle, and we’re all now feasting on the spoils of your victory. During the last few months alone we’ve had a few comedians spout racism, a basketball coach put forth anti-Semitism and several high-profile spoutings of anti-gay epithets.
What surprises me, I guess, is how choosy the anti-P.C. crowd is about which hate speech it will not tolerate.
Sure, there were voices of protest when the TV actor Isaiah Washington called a gay colleague a “faggot.” But corporate America didn’t pull its advertising from “Grey’s Anatomy,” as it did with Mr. Imus, did it? And when Ann Coulter likewise tagged a presidential candidate last month, she paid no real price.
In fact, when Bill Maher discussed Ms. Coulter’s remarks on his HBO show, he repeated the slur no fewer than four times himself; each mention, I must note, solicited a laugh from his audience. No one called for any sort of apology from him. (Well, actually, I did, so the following week he only used it once.)
Face it, if a Pentagon general, his salary paid with my tax dollars, can label homosexual acts as “immoral” without a call for his dismissal, who are the moral high and mighty kidding?
Our nation, historically bursting with generosity toward strangers, remains remarkably unkind toward its own. Just under our gleaming patina of inclusiveness, we harbor corroding guts. America, I tell you that it doesn’t matter how many times you brush your teeth. If your insides are rotting your breath will stink. So, how do you people choose which hate to embrace, which to forgive with a wink and a week in rehab, and which to protest? Where’s my copy of that rule book?
Let me cite a non-volatile example of how prejudice can cohabit unchecked with good intentions. I am a huge fan of David Letterman’s. I watch the opening of his show a couple of times a week and have done so for decades. Without fail, in his opening monologue or skit Mr. Letterman makes a joke about someone being fat. I kid you not. Will that destroy our nation? Should he be fired or lose his sponsors? Obviously not.
But I think that there is something deeper going on at the Letterman studio than coincidence. And, as I’ve said, I cite this example simply to illustrate that all kinds of prejudice exist in the human heart. Some are harmless. Some not so harmless. But we need to understand who we are if we wish to change. (In the interest of full disclosure, I should confess to not only being a gay American, but also a fat one. Yes, I’m a double winner.)
I urge you to look around, or better yet, listen around and become aware of the prejudice in everyday life. We are so surrounded by expressions of intolerance that I am in shock and awe that anyone noticed all these recent high-profile instances. Still, I’m gladdened because our no longer being deaf to them may signal their eventual eradication.
The real point is that you cannot harbor malice toward others and then cry foul when someone displays intolerance against you. Prejudice tolerated is intolerance encouraged. Rise up in righteousness when you witness the words and deeds of hate, but only if you are willing to rise up against them all, including your own. Otherwise suffer the slings and arrows of disrespect silently.

Gay activist and author Larry Kramer's emotional open letter to the American public, published in Tuesday's Los Angeles Times, posed a challenge: "Gays are hated. Prove me wrong."
Kramer spoke last week at New York's Gay & Lesbian Center, celebrating the 20th anniversary of ACT UP, a grass-roots AIDS organization, and protesting the U.S. military's adherence to "don't ask, don't tell."
In a follow-up letter, Kramer asked Americans how they can stay silent on gay issues.

". . . You may say you don't hate us, but the people you vote for do, so what's the difference? Our own country's democratic process declares us to be unequal. Which means, in a democracy, that our enemy is you. You treat us like crumbs. You hate us. And sadly, we let you."
The letter was originally titled "A Letter to America's Heterosexuals" and retitled by the L.A. Times "Why do straights hate gays? An aging 72-year-old man isn't hopeful about the future."
Blogger Andy Towle criticized the headline as an insult to Kramer's 30-year contribution to the gay community.
"Whether or not you agree with Kramer's approach, you would think that the paper could find a bit more respect in its description of the longtime activist," Towle wrote.
"After all, his work with ACT UP was a major force in getting the AIDS epidemic the attention it deserved at crucial moments throughout the crisis."
Kramer has been a gay rights and HIV/AIDS advocate since the early 1970s.

To the "gay guys" at Sunsilk

This campaign is racist. Most women of color are not blondes.
The caustic comments between women, based on hair color, pander to the ridiculous notion that women should compete, attack each other and hate each other, for the approval of men, based on their marketability as sex objects.
The nasty comments regarding such things as intelligence, facial hair, etc. are designed to feed in to women's worst insecurities about body dysmorphia. Women have facial hair; that's natural. To make it the butt of "jokes" is cruel and adds to the abuse any woman can get, any time, on any street in this nation.
It's teaching young girls, in particular, to hate themselves and to believe that only by buying unnecessary products will they achieve self esteem through public acceptance.
To have a so-called "gay" man scream shrill insults at strangers on the street is a homophobic stereotype. I hate it.
I just discovered that both "Sunsilk" and "Dove" are owned by Unilever. So the "Dove Real Beauty" campaign is a sham, fueled by the woman-hating campaigns of Sunsilk.

I hate your advertising promotions so much that I had to do a Google search, just to find out the name of this product, Sunsilk.

As a result, I am now doing research into all Unilever products, so I'll be sure never to buy them.
Has any of you ever been physically assaulted by a gang of teenage boys on the back of a public bus because you don't match the advertisers' concept of what is acceptable, physical appearance? I have. Your campaigns encourage superficial prejudices, based on physical appearance.

PBS is supposed to inform. I watched, in horror, as this "Dr." spoke of "using science," yet never educated the public in the specific, scientific basis for her arguments. Instead, she referred to applications with so-called, "power" ingredients, never stating what those were or in what proportions they would be used.
I saw her pander to the most base self-hatred and body image dysmorphia among women in this culture.
I also saw that NOBODY on this so-called "special" was a woman of color. And of course, there were no men!
This program was geared to upper middle class white women of privilege who waste tons of money, time and attention on an irrelevent issue.
It certainly wasn't in the best interests of women. And PBS has a dirth of programming on women's issues.
And her "science" is flawed. At no point did she ever address issues of diet and hydration. Drinking water was never even mentioned!
She hawks her junk on QVC and the shopping network. She should stay there and let programming be better developed for serious women's issues, science and health programming.
How can I ever trust PBS again?

She keeps betraying my trust
Tonight, she wouldn't even relate to me about the Oprah special on her
school for girls in South Africa.

I always wanted to start a school. And my work with the kids in the War
Zone was so important to me. It killed me when the city condemned the
house and threw me into the street.
She knows all that.
It's always about her interests, projects, needs, etc. I always play
second fiddle, am required to put my needs aside. Her job, school, body
dysmorphia, hypocondria and self-obsession always come first.
She can't conceive of treating me with minimum respect.

wanted to watch the program.
Other than your obsession with that issue, you had no interest in the
program, except to put down Oprah.
I wasn't watching Oprah; I was watching the girls. They're the story.
Your behavior was disrespectful and disruptive. I don't frequently
express much interest in promotions for tv programming. I did for this
special, and told you so over several days.
You KNEW this was important to me.
I don't ask for much, but I do provide a lot. I wanted to see that
program, to enjoy and savor it.
You poisoned it. I think you did it intentionally.
I seldom ask for your emotional support. I needed it tonight.
As usual, you were not only not there for me, but you acted like I was
torturing you, just because I wanted to have you actually stand within
my line of vision while I spoke to you. You made faces; you groaned; you
sighed heavily; you rolled your eyes. You made it very clear you didn't
even want to listen to me.
Tonight was an incredible opportunity for us to bond, discuss something
profoundly important to the health of the world. You threw it away.
I give up. Nothing I do to support, help and encourage you will ever be
enough to earn your respect. You will never treat me as an equal. You
will always treat me as a threat to your well being.
I quit. You're on your own.

NM domestic partner legislation

HB603: Domestic Partner Rights And Responsibilities Act Scheduled for Hearing on Friday, February 23 at 1:30 pm
HB 603 is scheduled for public hearing in the House Judiciary Committee this Friday, February 20, 2007 at 1:30 pm in Room 309 at the Roundhouse. Once again, we will need people to attend the hearing.
Assuming HB603 passes House Judiciary, it will likely be heard on the House Floor next Wednesday, February 28. (It is possible that the hearing on the House Floor could be scheduled for Tuesday February 27th, but at this point Wednesday is our best estimate.) As soon as we receive confirmation on the hearing date, we will let you know. We will need to fill the Gallery with our supporters!
TELL THE LEGISLATORS TO SUPPORT NEW MEXICAN FAMILIES BY VOTING FOR HB603
The pace is picking up, and EQNM needs you to take action. We need people to participate in our online campaigns, but we also need people to make phone calls and personal visits to the legislators!!!!
If you are willing to visit the Roundhouse to speak one on one with legislators, please contact our Executive Director, Alexis Blizman at 505-224-2766. She will be glad to meet you there (schedule permitting) or at least go over talking points and how to find the legislators that we need to put pressure on.

An Albuquerque man is recovering after police say he was beaten in an incident with details that are rather disgusting.
Police say the 19-year-old man got into a scuffle with some friends that soon turned into an attack.
“He was confronted and basically overpowered,” said Albuquerque police spokesperson Trish Hoffman. “They started kicking and punching him, then threatened him with a knife.”
They forced the man into a dress, police say, put make-up on him, forced a sex toy into his mouth and rubbed dog feces on him.
The suspects stole his wallet and watch, police say.
The victim was released from the hospital on Friday. The suspects could face felony charges.

Here's what this young woman went through:
Raped as she returned to her car after attending a local parade,
she escaped and reported the attack to local police. As she was
being interviewed, police discovered she had an outstanding
four-year-old warrant for failing to pay a fine related to an
incident when she was a juvenile.
Just hours after being raped, she was handcuffed and hauled off
to jail. But it gets worse. A jail worker blocked this young
woman from taking emergency contraception to prevent pregnancy,
stopping her from taking the required second dose for more than
24 hours longer than recommended.
The reason: the jail supervisor doesn't "believe" in emergency
contraception.
Will you join me in asking your governor to ensure that women in
your state have access to emergency contraception?

Lots of winter projects
My g/f & I are planning a 10-day trip, traveling the Santa Fe Trail from
here in Albuquerque all the way to Kansas City and back. We're shooting
video for an Independent Study project of hers at college. It'll be a
video documentary, based on a radio play she produced several years ago.

So, the truck needs cleaning out; bedding and cooking utensils need
washing; goats & chickens need extra feed (so do cats). Clothes need
packing; cameras need batteries, film, etc.
It's a lot of work. As usual, she can't help, because she works full
time and has other classes, too.
It's her last semester. She'll graduate, with honors, in May. Maybe then
I can fall apart! I've never known her without tremendous pressure on
her.
Besides all that, Dudette at http://net4tv.com Games has offered me a
job, writing about WebTV stuff for her users. I'll have a blog; it'll
have a forum, so readers can reply, etc. I'm also helping her set up
online greeting cards and email signatures.
So, I've been awful busy!
BTW: I'll be gone from the 9th through the 19th of February. We're
taking the WebTV and a small TV set with us. We'll periodically stay in
hotels. That way, we can post still photos online, check email, etc.
I'll try to post in my newsgroup and blogs then, but who knows?
Mostly, we'll be sleeping in the truck, on an air mattress, in February.
We go through Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and, of course, New
Mexico. Nothing like a camping trip, in the DEAD OF WINTER! brrr.

"Partian birth" abortion is misnamed. It implies the baby would have
lived, if nobody had interfered.
These are late-term pregnancies of horribly deformed babies, who will
not survive without nutrients from the mothers' bodies. They will die,
outside the womb. Even though they will not have normal -- or even
functionally below normal -- brain function, they will die agonizing
deaths.
Now, that's only the "living" babies.
Most of these late term procedures are done on babies WHO ARE DEAD
inside the mother!
The safest way to remove the dead tissue (which can kill the mother) is
by removing it vaginally, in pieces.
It is a horrible situation. The mother is grieving the death of her
child. Her health and life are in tremendous danger. And the state is
telling her doctor not to perform a necessary, medical procedure to save
her life.
So, doctors are having to perform emergency C-sections to remove these
dead babies. This puts the mother at greater risk of dying, as it cuts
open her belly and her uterus. She is probably already compromised. She
may suffer blood poisoning, from the dead baby inside her. Interfering
with her circulation, by cutting into her, can spread the poisons and
kill her.
These procedures are RARELY done and then only in emergencies.
I thought the Conservatives believed in keeping the government out of
our lives? Why does that not pertain to women's bodies, and the medical
professionals who CARE for women's bodies?

I'd run away from a VERY psychotic mother and was living in Venice
Beach, Ca, during the seventies.
There, I met quite a few of those "seventies feminists." They saved my
life. They taught me to take care of myself: balance a check book,
change my own tires & oil, get an education, etc. They taught me not to
be a "typical female:" a victim of circumstances, dependent on men who
might exploit me.
Most young, blonde, pretty women who run away from home and end up in
Los Angeles end up: dead, addicted or pimped. Usually, all three.
We learned self-examinations together. The Boston Women's Health
Collective had just published the book, _Our Bodies, Ourselves_ . I
still own my first-edition copy.
Most women have no idea how their bodies work, or even what they look
like. And many think they're ugly.
I've been very fortunate.

I really resent all the ads with bare-breasted women. I didn't sign up for soft-core porn, for one thing. For another thing, it sends a TERRIBLE message to little girls, in particular, but also to little boys: a woman's only value is to pleasure men? One of the ads was for so-called, "intimate dating." That's sex hook-ups, in case you didn't know. If children are seeing these ads, I won't be able to recommend Marapets to any friends, adult or child. There are lots of healthy things to sell on Marapets. Women's breasts shouldn't be used this way; their purpose is the feeding of babies. Anything else is perverse, obscene and insulting to women.

physician, heal thyself

I went to his website today, looking to see what happened to a VERY abusive couple who torture their children. I think they ought to have called the police and had them arrested, based on the torture I saw in home video tape. I was curios about any follow up.
Then, I saw a question, apparantly a topic for a future show. I was dumbfounded, so I clicked on it.
Under the flash caption, "Be On The Show," they had form fields one could fill about the following "questions:"

Are You a Lesbian Who Hates Men? Are you a lesbian who's mad at the world for everything people have done to you? Are you a self-proclaimed bitch who will argue with anyone? Do you know you have anger issues but don't know how to control yourself? Tell us your story.
This is what I wrote:
A "bitch" is a female dog: she is protective of those she loves. She will attack when provoked.
Lesbians don't hate men; they love women. The worst "man-haters" I've ever met were all heterosexual women or gay men: familiarity breeds contempt.
Many Lesbians and pansexual women fear men, just as many men (hetero or not) and almost all hetero women do. Men are only encouraged, in this society, to express 2 emotions: aggression and sexual arousal.
Any man we meet on the street is a potential rapist. Men are, statistically, more likely to commit violent crimes. Male heterosexuals commit most of the incest and child rape.
We don't hate men. Men hate themselves. We FEAR men.
But we aren't sexual with women because of MEN. Men are irrelevent to our love lives. We love women.
Why do you find it necessary to frame this argument this way? Why are you associating woman loving with man hating? Does everything have to center around men, including women who love women? Do you feel threatened by women who don't need you?
Why are you calling Lesbians bitches? Why do you seem to think we are "out of control?" Is it because we're out of YOUR control? Is that so important to you?
I can go months without thinking anything of consequence about any man. Do you see that as threatening: that you're just not that important to me?
Do you frame questions to Black people the way you've framed this series of questions to Lesbians? Do you use racial stereotyping to try to provoke something "worthy" of ratings? Do you do this with the disabled?
Then, why are you using stereotypes that were never true, and that were addressed by the Queer Liberation Movement more than 30 years ago?
Are you insecure in your own sexuality? Do you feel the need to abuse those who aren't like you, in order to force them to either conform to your comfort zone, or, otherwise, alienate them into disappearing from your field-of-vision?
How can you help heal the human mind, while being so blatantly unhealthy?

Queer memorial in Albuquerque

Hi everyone,
This evening (June 8) is the time to join with Albuquerque Pride and other members of the GLBT community for the commemorative walk and the dedication (groundbreaking) of a GLBT memorial as part of the Arts in the Park city project at Morningside Park.
Morningside Park was one of the first places Pride was held back in the 1970's and is recognized as the birthplace of Pride here in Albuquerque. Walkers will come from places where Pride started or ended over the years and arrive at Morningside park by 8:00pm. There will be a powerful candlelight vigil and a look back and forward at the GLBT Community. Reception to follow. The city of Albuqeurque Arts in the Park project worked with Pride to create the memorial.
If you want to be part of the commemorative walk from prior years Pride Parade sites to Morningside Park be at the park at 6:30PM. (Rides will take you to the start sites.)
If you just want to be present at the dedication and vigil it starts at the park at 8:00 PM.

Pledge-A-Picket Fundraiser

Anti-Choice Protest on Good Friday
Every year on Good Friday, anti-choice protesters hold a
demonstration at PPNM's surgical site in Albuquerque. Last year
183 men, women and children turned out to picket and pray - the
largest such gathering ever here. We're expecting another big
crowd this year.
For the privacy and safety of our patients, the clinic is closed
on Good Friday but we hold an annual Pledge-A-Picket fundraiser
to offset the loss of revenue. Individuals pledge to donate a

Typically, we have 3-4 protesters per day. If you

by the amount of your pledge to figure your contribution. If you
pledge 25 cents a picketer and we have 15 protesters during the
week and 190 on Good Friday, we'd multiply 205 x .25 for a total
of $51.25. You may put a cap on your pledge.

our Good Friday fundraiser. Please tell us how much you want to
pledge per picketer and if you'd like to cap the amount. We'll
notify you by email after Good Friday to let you know how many

PPNM to Hold Pledge-A-Picket Fundraiser in Anticipation of LargeAnti-Choice Protest on Good Friday
Every year on Good Friday, anti-choice protesters hold a
demonstration at PPNM's surgical site in Albuquerque. Last year
183 men, women and children turned out to picket and pray - the
largest such gathering ever here. We're expecting another big
crowd this year.
For the privacy and safety of our patients, the clinic is closed
on Good Friday but we hold an annual Pledge-A-Picket fundraiser
to offset the loss of revenue. Individuals pledge to donate a
